Thankful Thursday: Love

by Hopeful Spirit on Thursday, July 5, 2007

“Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer …

You’ll wish that summer could always be here
You’ll wish that summer could always be here.”

Iris at Sting My Heart wrote about love today and I’m following her lead because it is a great topic for this hot summer day.

Remember that old Nat King Cole song? It was going through my head this afternoon as I was floating around the pool. Even though it was 110 degrees outside, the water was cool and refreshing, so it really didn’t seem that hot until I got out and discovered that I didn’t even need a towel because the air was so warm that the water seemed to instantly evaporate.

Yes, I love summer. I love the water and the feel of the sun beating down on me when I’m in the water. I tan very easily, so I love that my skin gets a little darker each day and the sun streaks my hair my hair, saving me the trouble and expense of having my hairdresser do it! The sun makes me feel energetic and happy … like the world is full of nothing but possibilities.

Conversely, I love the cool breeze wafts in my window late most evenings, helping me unwind and prepare to sleep comfortably in anticipation of another hot, hot day.

I can’t believe that it has been a whole week since I wrote here … I had a couple different groups of company visiting from out of town. That was fun! We enjoyed some very lovely meals, lingering over a glass of wine to visit, reminisce and laugh. It is so nice to have friends that I have known for virtually my entire life. I don’t have to explain who I am or what I have experienced. They know because they went through those experiences with me. We have a collective basis of knowledge about each other that spans childhood, puberty, our crazy teen and college years, and adulthood’s responsibilities. So it is always exciting to have time to just sit and talk for awhile, especially when we can do it outside in the cool evening air.

And we celebrated July Fourth, of course. We had the most delicious food … there were many people in our group and everyone contributed. The watermelon was so sweet and delicious and the strawberries were huge and juicy! I had one that was the size of my fist — and no, I’m not exaggerating!

I love that one day per year Americans take time out of their busy lives to celebrate summer, family and the freedoms we take for granted the other 364 days. Yes, at the celebration we attended there was a moment of silence observed for all soldiers who paid the “ultimate price” on behalf of the United States, as well as acknowledgment of the veterans in the group and currently serving. Politics were put aside to remember those men and women who are obeying the directives of their Commander in Chief, government and lower-level leaders, faithfully serving irrespective of their personal opinions. I love that I got a lump in my throat during those moments, feeling thankful for all the blessings I have because of those who have served selflessly.

I love the fact that I may be away from the computer periodically throughout the remainder of the summer, so there may not be a new post from me each day but I will endeavor to be consistent because I have switched over to WordPress because, among the software’s great features is the ability to draft posts in advance and publish them at a specific time, even if you are aware from the computer. Have I mentioned yet how much I love WordPress?

So … I am now thankful to be signing off to go out on the patio to see if that cool breeze is kicking up yet. If not, the air conditioning will have to remain on and I will be thankful for it.

Have a wonderful, thankful evening!

We have been enjoying the pool around here too–but it has not been as hot because we have been getting a lot of rain.
Have a great weekend!
Stay cool.

How neat that have a pool you can float in and cool off during the hot summer days :)
It is so much fun to spend time with awesome friends, hang out and talk for hours — I am glad that you were able to do that over the last week.
Yes, we do forget about the awesome freedom we have here in the US. I too am thankful for my veteran and the ones who are still in the services.
I am thankful for the true freedom we find in Him :)
