He saw the injustice of discrimination. That whites and blacks had to use different bathrooms. That we were not allowed to use the same drinking fountains. That blacks had to eat in the back rooms of restaurants. And GOD HELP YOU IF YOU WERE CAUGHT SOCIALIZING WITH SOMEONE OF ANOTHER RACE. I remember Bull Conners , and the dogs siced on the protest march across the bridge. I remember Dr King speaking that everything must be done with LOVE REPLACING HATE AND RESENTMENT. I remember going to a movie to see it, and finding a protest demonstration going on there (and going to the movie with a bunch of new friends I'd not met before because they lived on the other side of the railroad tracks) I remember some childhood friends become "stand offish" because they (and their parents) had seen us there. I remember the pride I felt in my Father when he told the family (with my southern mother by his side), that we would probably soon go out of business, because he had decided to do what he felt was right and serve everyone in the front of the restaurant. no matter the result. We served everyone, the whites (mostly)quit coming in to eat there. There really was not enough black folks who could afford to eat out enough to support the family (11 kids) We lost the restaurant,our home and my inheritance. But I'll never forget the pride I felt in my father for doing the right thing at that time. I say GOD bless Dr King. And all his family. forever!
