In “other” Words: Who is the Guest of Honor at Your Party?

July 24, 2007

You know someone like Martha. Perhaps you are like her.

She’s the “hostess with the mostest:” The most beautiful silver, china and crystal, the elegantly lettered place cards, the exquisite linens, the breathtakingly gorgeous centerpieces, the gourmet food that tastes like nothing you’ve ever experienced before.

When she plans a dinner party, the preparations begin weeks or even months in advance. There is usually a theme and, of course, color scheme. She spends what seems like an eternity setting the table, making sure everything is in precisely the right spot before going back to the kitchen to assure that the food preparation is progressing flawlessly.

In “other” Words: I Can Do Everything through the One

July 10, 2007

Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing yet had been done.“
~ C.S. Lewis ~

When I first read this quote, it did not resonate with me. The second portion of the sentence, “as if nothing yet had been done,” is what bothered me.

What do you mean, ‘as if nothing yet had been done’?” I found myself asking the computer screen. “What about all of my hard work up to this point? What about my accomplishments? What about my spiritual growth? I’m not the same spiritually immature person I was yesterday or the day before or last month or last year or … ”

And as I walked around thinking about the quote for a couple of days, the brilliance of its simplicity began to come into focus.

In “other” Words: My Prayer List

June 26, 2007

When there is little awareness of real need there is little real prayer.“
~ Donald S. Whitney ~
Spiritual Disciplines For the Christian Life

The above quote speaks to me of my basic humanity.

Do your kids give you the standard “Mom, I told you about it” response when they suddenly announce that they have to go somewhere, do something or need money just when you have no cash in your possession and no time to visit the ATM on the way to wherever you are headed? Do you swear that you knew nothing about it, while they insist that they told you yesterday, last week, last month or whenever?

In “other” Words: A Mother’s Love

June 19, 2007

Our mother used to tell us, “I do not want to hear that you are bored. There are plenty of things to do. Find something.” And then she would walk away, going about her own business, leaving us to figure out something to occupy our own time. She used to call herself a “domestic engineer” which would translate today to how many bloggers describe themselves: SAHM. It took me a few blog visits to figure out that meant “stay at home mom.“She was always at home. Every single day when we got home from school, she was there. Rain or shine. Notice I did not say that she picked us up from school. No, we rode our bikes or walked to school and we only got a ride one way or the other if it was really raining. A few sprinkles? “You won’t melt.”

YOU?">In “other” Words: Who and What is Leading YOU?

June 12, 2007

Faith never knows where it is being led, but it loves and knows the One who is leading.“
~ Oswald Chambers ~

I tried to write this post last week, but as I mentioned in my Thankful Thursday entry, Blogger then sent it to the abyss. I’ve been working on it ever since and dare say that it is the most difficult writing I have done in a long, long time. But I also feel that it is perhaps the most important writing I have done in a long, long time. Why am I telling you this? Because I want you to demonstrate a forgiving and charitable spirit as you read because my efforts are surely less than perfect, but heart-felt nonetheless.

In “Other” Words: I’ll Risk It

Lower your expectations of earth. This isn’t heaven, so don’t expect it to be.”~ Max Lucado ~Nothing on this earth will disappoint you more or more often than … people. There is nothing on the planet as capable of destroying your spirit or your self-confidence as another flawed human being. It happens time and again. You let […]

What makes life on this frightful sod so exquisite is God’s merciful propensity to perform divine tasks amid deeply flawed people.” ~ Beth Moore, LPM Blog ~ Upon seeing the quote for this week, off I went to the source to read it in context and do some research about it. I had never heard of Beth […]

In “Other” Words: Bringing Good Vibrations out of Broken Chords

May 7, 2007

When God is involved, anything can happen.
Be open and stay that way. God has a beautiful way of bringing good vibrations out of broken chords.”

~ Chuck Swindoll ~

No quote could more aptly summarize the theme and genesis of this blog.

This blog was born out of broken chords — literally and figuratively.

A lifelong musician, I spent my life serving various churches in that capacity. It was the broken chords of my relationship with a particular congregation but also, on a much larger scale, a denomination, and the institutional church itself that inspired me to begin this blog in order to chart the new music that permeates and resonates in my life today.

In “Other” Words: “My People Pray for Me”

May 1, 2007

By perseverance the snail reached the ark.“
~Charles Spurgeon~

He has a “fresh style, … uncommon clarity, [the] ability to provide solid doctrine upon which people could base their lives, and an ability to link his sermons to his hearers’ needs.”

If that were the endorsement offered by a parishioner, I would certainly be interested in hearing the pastor in question speak. Wouldn’t you?
