God-Reality, God-Initiative and God-Provisions

February 6, 2008

I didn’t hear the siren. To be honest, I was dozing in front of the television because I had a very long day. So I grabbed a light dinner and settled in for the evening. But then my husband came into the room and said, “Doesn’t look good across the street.” He heard the siren and then noticed the red […]

Thursday Thirteen #10: Guest Blogger on the Horizon

September 5, 2007

Today I welcome Larry Chouinard as a Guest Blogger On the Horizon! Larry writes Spiritual Conversations which I discovered via Emerging Grace. Both are well-written and thought-provoking. I highly recommend them.I found myself nodding my head in agreement and raising my hand to exclaim “Absolutely!” “Right on!” or “You know it” about every one of the items on this list, so I am delighted to present:

You Might Be Missional if …

1. You talk more about the Kingdom of God than you do your local church.

2. You are more in awe of the radical Jesus than you are the charisma of your pastor/preacher.

3. You feel a greater sense of community in the parking lot than in the pews.

Thursday Thirteen #9: Thirteen Things About Me

May 23, 2007

Angel Mama from Pearls of Wisdom tagged me last week to participate in the “Eight Things About Me” meme. Things have been so crazy for me that I haven’t had a chance to respond until now. So since I was having a hard time coming up with a topic for Thirteen Thursday, anyway, I decided to present “Eight Thirteen Things About Me:”

1. I was baptized as an infant in a congregation of the American Lutheran Church (one of the predecessors of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America that was formed in 1988).

Thursday Thirteen #8: Thirteen Thoughts About “Radical Inclusivity”

May 9, 2007

Thirteen Thoughts About “Radical Inclusivity” Yesterday, I received an e-mail from a reader who said: I read your very first post in January and a portion stood out. (“… it became clear to me that, as evidenced by his teaching and writing on the question of whether or not gay persons should be ordained and married by the […]

Thursday Thirteen #7: Thirteen Required Attributes of Any Church I (Might Eventually) Attend

May 2, 2007

Thirteen Required Attributes of Any Church I (Might Eventually) Attend Time to look at the glass from the opposite direction, i.e., half full. Last week, I shared thirteen of the things I do not miss about the institutional church. This week, I’m enumerating, in no particular order, thirteen of the attributes or characteristics I consider mandatory in order for […]

April 25, 2007

Thirteen Things I Don’t Miss About the Institutional Church People keep asking me if I miss church. How many ways can I say “no”? Not in the least. So here are thirteen of the things I specifically do not miss about being a member of the institutional church. 1. Giving up endless hours of my life every week performing various […]

Thursday Thirteen #2: Thirteen Mistakes Often Made by Well-Meaning Christians (Including Me)

March 6, 2007

Included in the First Edition of the Carnival of Christian Advice, hosted at Ask Andrea. I actually got the idea for this list from a post on a blog titled “Friendly Atheist”. The author apparently goes to different churches as an observer and compiled a list of “20 Things That Christians Do in Church That Annoy Me”. This […]

Thursday Thirteen #1: Thirteen Ways and Places to Worship

February 22, 2007

It is not necessary, of course, to be inside a particular structure in order to worship the Divine Creator. And, in fact, as the American Heritage Dictionary definition set forth above shows, the act of worshiping does not involve any particular action or behavior. Worshipping can be as simple as honoring and loving the Divine Creator which is something I do, consciously or subconsciously, every moment of every day.

Here are thirteen of the ways and places that I have been worshipping since fleeing the institutional church:
